{"id":115,"date":"2009-09-24T03:45:11","date_gmt":"2009-09-24T03:45:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/buber.net\/Basque\/?p=115"},"modified":"2009-09-24T03:45:11","modified_gmt":"2009-09-24T03:45:11","slug":"a-community-coming-together","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buber.net\/Basque\/2009\/09\/24\/a-community-coming-together\/","title":{"rendered":"A Community Coming Together"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/buber.net\/Basque\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/gerrikaitz-cross.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-129 alignleft\" style=\"border: 1px solid black; margin: 5px;\" title=\"gerrikaitz-cross\" src=\"https:\/\/buber.net\/Basque\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/gerrikaitz-cross-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"gerrikaitz-cross\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>As I mentioned earlier, a couple of weeks ago, I spent a week in Munitibar, the town my dad grew up in and where his brother runs the Herriko Taberna.<\/p>\n<p>During that week, something like three people died, including the oldest resident of the town (who was 98).\u00a0 Of course, for each, there was a mass.\u00a0 There was also an anniversary mass for maybe another couple of people who had died the year before (I wasn&#8217;t quite clear how many people the anniversary mass was for and how many had died that week).<\/p>\n<p>In any case, to me, the most interesting part wasn&#8217;t the mass, but the aftershock, if y<a href=\"https:\/\/buber.net\/Basque\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/munitibar-cemetary.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-128 alignright\" style=\"border: 1px solid black; margin: 5px;\" title=\"munitibar-cemetary\" src=\"https:\/\/buber.net\/Basque\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/munitibar-cemetary-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"munitibar-cemetary\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>ou will.\u00a0 The town has maybe 500 residents (though, with the sudden boom in apartments, that is maybe growing).\u00a0 For the last mass, the anniversary mass, maybe 300 people attended.\u00a0 The other masses also drew large numbers of people.\u00a0 What was most interesting was the life in the plaza, in the bars, afterwards.\u00a0 The funerals brought everyone together, some who hadn&#8217;t seen each other in quite some time, family who had moved to the big city.\u00a0 They used the opportunity for family reunions, big lunches in the plaza<a href=\"https:\/\/buber.net\/Basque\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/munitibar-church.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-127 alignleft\" style=\"border: 1px solid black; margin: 5px;\" title=\"munitibar-church\" src=\"https:\/\/buber.net\/Basque\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/munitibar-church-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"munitibar-church\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>, time to catch up with everyone.\u00a0 They wandered the town, txikiteando, just soaking in life. The way of life simply lends itself to this type of celebration, with the numerous bars and the habit of going from one to the other, having just a small drink at each, chatting with whomever you find.<\/p>\n<p>From the death of their neighbors, their family members, they came together to celebrate life.\u00a0 It was amazing to watch the entire town simply be a community, be there for one another.\u00a0 In some sense, the funerals were more than a goodbye to the people who died, they were also an opportunity for the town to be a community.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As I mentioned earlier, a couple of weeks ago, I spent a week in Munitibar, the town my dad grew up in and where his brother runs the Herriko Taberna.
