So well known that a type of sword popular in England and America was called a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bilbo_(sword)\">bilbo<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oxforddictionaries.com\/definition\/english\/bilbo\">after the Basque city<\/a>. (In Basque, the name of Bilbao is Bilbo&#8230;) \u00a0In Basque, they were called <em>Labana Bizkaitarrak<\/em>. These swords were made in Bilbao and exported widely.<\/p>\n<p>This sword was popular because it was typically well forged and very flexible.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bilboes\">Bilboes<\/a> also refers to a type of shackles, put around the ankles to immobilize people. While it isn&#8217;t so obvious that the name of these shackles also comes from the Basque city, the fact that they were made of steel suggests it is possible. <a href=\"https:\/\/eu.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Joseba_Zulaika\">Joseba Zulaika<\/a>, in his book <a href=\"https:\/\/basque.unr.edu\/academics-people-zulaika.html\">That Old Bilbao Moon<\/a>, suggests the same origin for the name. However, these devices were in use before Bilbao started exporting steel to England. In any case, these bilboes have a dark history, used to confine prisoners and slaves.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/buber.net\/Basque\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/240px-Bilbo_Baggins_Tolkien_illustration.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1332\" src=\"https:\/\/buber.net\/Basque\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/240px-Bilbo_Baggins_Tolkien_illustration-199x300.jpg\" alt=\"240px-Bilbo_Baggins_Tolkien_illustration\" width=\"199\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/buber.net\/Basque\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/240px-Bilbo_Baggins_Tolkien_illustration-199x300.jpg 199w, https:\/\/buber.net\/Basque\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/240px-Bilbo_Baggins_Tolkien_illustration.jpg 240w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 199px) 100vw, 199px\" \/><\/a>The most famous Bilbo, these days, is <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bilbo_Baggins\">Bilbo Baggins<\/a>, of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Hobbit\"><em>The Hobbit<\/em><\/a> fame. While it isn&#8217;t clear where <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/J._R._R._Tolkien\">J. R. R. Tolkien<\/a> got the name for his character, at one point Bilbo finds a sword, called <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sting_(Middle-earth)\">Sting<\/a>, that plays an immensely important role in the\u00a0story of Mr. Baggins. It is possible that Tolkien named his character after the sword or, maybe <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sting_(Middle-earth)#cite_note-2\">more probable<\/a>, was inspired by the name he had chosen for his character to outfit him with a sword.<\/p>\n<p>The photo of bilbo, the sword, not Bilbo, the hobbit, linked to above is from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.michaeldlong.com\/Catalogue\/Swords\/18th-Century\/Spanish\/Spanish-Bilbo-Sword.aspx\">this site<\/a>.
