The customer was a French abbey.<\/li>\n<li>The <a href=\"http:\/\/sagardotegiak.com\/en\/mundo-sidrero\/historia\/caserio-lagar-vasco\/\">contracts of Basque sailors<\/a> stipulated that they would receive a specific amount, 2-3 liters, of sagardoa &#8212; Basque hard cider &#8212; each day.\n<ul>\n<li>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.en.travelbasquecountry.com\/what-to-see\/more-suggestions\/basque-cider-tradition-and-history.aspx\">vitamin C in cider helped prevent scurvy<\/a> and the Basque sailors had less trouble with scurvy than those of other nations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1429 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/buber.net\/Basque\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/euskal-etxeak-whalers-1.jpg\" alt=\"euskal-etxeak-whalers-1\" width=\"250\" height=\"262\" srcset=\"https:\/\/buber.net\/Basque\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/euskal-etxeak-whalers-1.jpg 363w, https:\/\/buber.net\/Basque\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/euskal-etxeak-whalers-1-286x300.jpg 286w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/>In addition, all of the people on the ship, including the cabin boys, were paid, at least in part, with oil.\n<ul>\n<li>This model was unique in Europe.<\/li>\n<li>It provided a greater incentive for success.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The churches in the Basque Country taxed each ship returning to port, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iberianature.com\/spainblog\/2007\/06\/basque-whaling-tradition\/\">wanting the tongue of the whale<\/a> and some percent of the oil.\n<ul>\n<li>Many churches were financed by Basque whale oil.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Often, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.euskadi.eus\/-\/contenidos\/informacion\/06_revista_euskaletxeak\/en_ee\/adjuntos\/75_i.pdf\">cabin boys were left behind<\/a> on foreign shores, such as Newfoundland, to learn the local languages.<\/li>\n<li>Some times, local populations fought each other for the right to trade with the Basques.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Images were found in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.euskadi.eus\/-\/contenidos\/informacion\/06_revista_euskaletxeak\/en_ee\/adjuntos\/75_i.pdf\">this issue of <\/a><\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.euskadi.eus\/-\/contenidos\/informacion\/06_revista_euskaletxeak\/en_ee\/adjuntos\/75_i.pdf\">Euskal Etxeak<\/a><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Interesting facts about Basque Whalers\/Sailors that I learned from Christine Echeverria Bender during a presentation she gave at Jaialdi: The first recorded transaction involving Basque sailors selling whale oil was in the year 670.
