{"id":143,"date":"2009-09-27T03:42:44","date_gmt":"2009-09-27T03:42:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/buber.net\/Basque\/?p=143"},"modified":"2009-09-27T03:42:44","modified_gmt":"2009-09-27T03:42:44","slug":"link-dump-pelota-picon-and-pipes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buber.net\/Basque\/2009\/09\/27\/link-dump-pelota-picon-and-pipes\/","title":{"rendered":"Link Dump: Pelota, Picon, and Pipes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Here are a few links I&#8217;ve run across that I thought were worth sharing.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" style=\"border: 1px solid black; margin: 5px;\" src=\"http:\/\/api.ning.com\/files\/Za*PDfdsfXggrXKe0mFEY7FVyg3sHiWN*l5a9seAnrdOzSBmRfZ38F2w1zBJZFsl6Z252f0v7co9GdPjJ8V*ibFHIr-YHZRq\/Bild44.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" \/>Pelota is immensely popular in Euskal Herria.\u00a0 Most evenings I was there, a match was being shown on the TVs of most bars.\u00a0 Even though cesta punta &#8212; jai alai to the rest of the world &#8212; is the most flashy version of pelota, the most popular within the Basque Country is pelota mano &#8212; hand ball.\u00a0 Every match I saw on TV was mano.\u00a0 It is amazing to think about the punishment these guys do to their hands.\u00a0 In any case, <a href=\"http:\/\/fronton.ning.com\/\">Fronton<\/a> is a site that is trying to bring &#8220;a game with centuries of traditions to a new millenuim.&#8221; They have news, rankings, videos, forums, and more.\u00a0 If you are a pelota junky, or just want to learn more about the sport, this is the site for you.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not one for hard alcohol &#8212; simply just don&#8217;t like the taste &#8212; so I have never tried a Picon punch.\u00a0 Howe<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" style=\"border: 1px solid black; margin: 5px;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hotpipes.com\/spwhale.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" \/>ver, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/doc\/200909\/punch\">this article in The Atlantic<\/a> uses Picon punch as the context to describe a bit of Basque history and the Basque way of life in the western US.\u00a0 According to the article, Picon punch isn&#8217;t what it used to be, mostly because the Amer Picon from which it was made is no longer available in the US.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hotpipes.com\/spwhale.html\">this site<\/a> describes a woodcut purchased by the website developer of a scene depicting Basques working on their catch after a whale hunt.\u00a0 What really caught the eye of the writer, however, is the presence of a bagpipe player.\u00a0 The Basques are known for lots of things, but playing the bagpipes is not necessarily one of them.\u00a0 The bagpipes, within Iberia, are typically associated with the Gallegos.\u00a0 But, the woodcut is from the late 1500s and the author is speculating that maybe the Basques did play the bagpipes.\u00a0 Does anyone know?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Here are a few links I&#8217;ve run across that I thought were worth sharing.
