He was imprisoned at least twice by the British, though much of his later activity was centered off the coast of Galicia. He was born and died in Hendaia.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/buber.net\/Basque\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/bfotw.pellot.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1875\" width=\"196\" height=\"299\" srcset=\"https:\/\/buber.net\/Basque\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/bfotw.pellot.jpg 235w, https:\/\/buber.net\/Basque\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/bfotw.pellot-197x300.jpg 197w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 196px) 100vw, 196px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Image from the <a href=\"http:\/\/aunamendi.eusko-ikaskuntza.eus\/es\/pellot-aspikoeta-etienne\/ar-123483\/\">Au\u00f1amendi Encyclopedia<\/a>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>He first struck out on his own as a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/French_corsairs\">corsair<\/a>, or privateer (an officially sanction pirate), in <a href=\"http:\/\/aunamendi.eusko-ikaskuntza.eus\/es\/pellot-aspikoeta-etienne\/ar-123483\/\">1796, commanding the ship <\/a><em><a href=\"http:\/\/aunamendi.eusko-ikaskuntza.eus\/es\/pellot-aspikoeta-etienne\/ar-123483\/\">Le Filibustier<\/a><\/em>. He had another 40 Basques under his command. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>He received the <a href=\"http:\/\/aunamendi.eusko-ikaskuntza.eus\/es\/pellot-aspikoeta-etienne\/ar-123483\/\">Legion of Honor in 1843<\/a>, some 30 years after he retired. Napoleon had denied him this honor because he had refused to return to direct service to the State.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Today, the children of Hendaia <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/\u00c9tienne_Pellot\">dress up every January<\/a> to celebrate his return.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00c9tienne Pellot Aspikoeta (1765-1856), known as the Basque Fox (le Renard Basque in French), was the last known French corsair.
