However, only one of these, <em>urdin<\/em>, that is native to the language. While today <em>urdin<\/em> means blue, <a href=\"http:\/\/buber.net\/Basque\/Euskara\/Larry\/note_5.php\">originally it also encompassed the colors grey and green<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/buber.net\/Basque\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/color-scheme-229-main.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1906\" width=\"351\" height=\"176\" srcset=\"https:\/\/buber.net\/Basque\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/color-scheme-229-main.png 576w, https:\/\/buber.net\/Basque\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/color-scheme-229-main-300x151.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 351px) 100vw, 351px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Urdin<\/em>, meaning grey, can be found in several phrases. For example, grey hair and beards are still often called <em>urdin<\/em>. And, the word for an old maid, <em>motxurdin<\/em>, has the sense of grey. Larry Trask described this word <a href=\"http:\/\/buber.net\/Basque\/Euskara\/Larry\/note_5.php\">here<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>As for green, there is a mushroom that is called gibelurdin. Gibel means back, so one might think that this word means &#8220;blue-underside,&#8221; but, as <a href=\"http:\/\/buber.net\/Basque\/Euskara\/Larry\/note_5.php\">Larry Trask<\/a> emphasizes, the actual mushroom has a green underside.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Other color words native to Basque are <em>beltz<\/em> (black), <em>zuri<\/em> (white), <em>gorri<\/em> (red), and <em>hori<\/em> (yellow). There are also words that describe shades of color more than a specific color, <a href=\"http:\/\/buber.net\/Basque\/Euskara\/Larry\/color.terms.php\">at least originally<\/a>.
