However, even in this wonderful landscape, there are special regions that stand out and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.urdaibai.org\/es\/portada.php\">Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve<\/a> is one of those. It also includes famous sites such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Oma_forest\">Oma Forest<\/a>, where artist Augustin Ibarrola painted a series of trees, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/tourism.euskadi.eus\/en\/cultural-heritage\/santimamine-caves\/aa30-12375\/en\/\">Santimami\u00f1e Caves<\/a>, an important archeological site with cave paintings dating back <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlasobscura.com\/places\/santimamine-cave\">13,000 years<\/a> (incidentally, the caves were accidentally discovered by a pair of kids). The Reserve <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/Urdaibai\/@43.3323509,-2.6941937,12.84z\/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x0:0x55c49fa2605430d4!8m2!3d43.3942058!4d-2.6881313\">extends<\/a> from the island of Izaro south to Mount Oiz. <\/li><li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.birdcenter.org\/en\">Urdaibai Bird Center<\/a> sits in the heart of the Reserve. The Basque Country is a focus point of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.busturia.org\/es-ES\/Turistas\/Paginas\/Observatoriodeaves.aspx\">bird migrations<\/a> between northern Europe and northern Africa. As a result, a large number of birds not seen in many other parts of Europe pass through Urdaibai. These include the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bilbaoturismo.net\/BilbaoTurismo\/en\/urdaibai-biosphere-reserve\">grey heron, the cormorant, the common tern, and the Eurasian spoonbill<\/a>.<\/li><li>The Reserve is also home to some of the Basque Country&#8217;s most spectacular beaches. These include <a href=\"https:\/\/tourism.euskadi.eus\/en\/beaches-reservoirs-rivers\/laga-beach\/aa30-12375\/en\/\">Laga<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/tourism.euskadi.eus\/en\/beaches-reservoirs-rivers\/laida-beach\/aa30-12375\/en\/\">Laida<\/a>, both belonging to the town Ibarrangelu. And, of course, there is <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mundaka\">Mundaka<\/a>, world-famous for its surfing.<\/li><li>The Reserve was created with several <a href=\"http:\/\/aunamendi.eusko-ikaskuntza.eus\/es\/urdaibai\/ar-128634\/\">objectives<\/a>. These include <ul><li>Ensure the preservation of the unique ecosystems of the coastline.<\/li><li>Maintain biological diversity.<\/li><li>Protect valuable landscape resources.<\/li><li>Promote environmental research and education of naturalistic and environmental heritage.<\/li><li>Encourage recreational use and tourism in an orderly manner.<\/li><li>Support rural development, improving the quality of life of the local population and the rational use of natural resources.<\/li><li>Maintain hydro-geological cycles and fight erosion.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Euskal Herria is known for its lush beaches that almost immediately lead to towering mountains that once were thought to be home of the goddess Mari.
