{"id":2425,"date":"2020-04-12T15:00:00","date_gmt":"2020-04-12T15:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/buber.net\/Basque\/?p=2425"},"modified":"2020-04-12T15:00:00","modified_gmt":"2020-04-12T15:00:00","slug":"basque-fact-of-the-week-basque-ideophones","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buber.net\/Basque\/2020\/04\/12\/basque-fact-of-the-week-basque-ideophones\/","title":{"rendered":"Basque Fact of the Week: Basque Ideophones"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>This week, a little bit of whimsy. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ideophone\">Ideophones<\/a> (also known as <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Onomatopoeia\">onomatopoeias<\/a>) are words whose sound invokes the idea of the meaning of the word. Some examples in English are bang, boom, and splish-splash (and yes, I already took a bath). These are often used in comics as their sound conveys action, like Batman&#8217;s pow! and bam! Basque is <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_ideophones_in_Basque\">full of these types of words<\/a>. In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/315137244_Basque_ideophones_from_a_typological_perspective\">a recent research article<\/a>, Iraide Ibarretxe Antu\u00f1ano analyzed some Basque ideophones, particularly from the point of view of their structure, meaning and function.
