Every little nook and cranny had been taken and the road itself barely had enough room for Maite\u2019s little car to squeeze through. People lined the road, walking toward the plaza. Even though Aulesti was a small town, it attracted a large crowd during the fiesta of San Juan, the patron of the village. But, Maite drove past all of the cars and all of the people toward the plaza. \u201cI know a special place,\u201d she said, winking at Kepa. Just before the plaza, she turned to the left down a narrow street, and then swung the car through a hole in a fence frame by some large trees and parked the car on the yard next to a large baserri. \u201cMy cousin lives in that house,\u201d she said as she turned off the car and opened her door. \u201cHe said I could park here any time. The plaza is just a ten minute walk from here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She led Kepa through the thickening throng of people toward the plaza. \u201cGoazen!\u201d she yelled at him over the din of the crowd. \u201cLet\u2019s go find the stage!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Weaving through the crowd like a snake, Maite and Kepa reached the stage in no time. They found Koldo behind the stage with his bandmates, getting their gear ready for the performance. When Koldo saw them, he cried out. \u201cKepa! Maite! I thought you wouldn\u2019t make it!\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"perfect-pullquote vcard pullquote-align-right pullquote-border-placement-left\" style=\"font-size:14px !important;\"><blockquote><p style=\"font-size:14px !important;\">Buber&#8217;s Basque Story is a weekly serial. While it is a work of fiction, it has elements from both my own experiences and stories I&#8217;ve heard from various people. The characters, while in some cases inspired by real people, aren&#8217;t directly modeled on anyone in particular. I expect there will be inconsistencies and factual errors. I don&#8217;t know where it is going, and I&#8217;ll probably forget where it&#8217;s been. Why am I doing this? To give me an excuse and a deadline for some creative writing and because I thought people might enjoy it. Gozatu!<\/p><\/blockquote><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe would have been here sooner if\u2026\u201d started Kepa but Maite elbowed him in the ribs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAnd miss your inaugural show?\u201d asked Maite. \u201cNever!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Koldo just smiled. \u201cLet me introduce you to the band. Meet Tximistak Ta Trumoiak!\u201d he said with pride. He pointed to a young woman with long blond hair who was unpacking a guitar. \u201cIdoia is lead guitar.\u201d Idoia nodded in recognition as she started strumming the strings. \u201cThat is Unai, he\u2019s the drummer.\u201d A young man with short hair, tattoos running up and down his arms, and a large hoop earring in one ear lifted his hand in a half-wave of acknowledgement. \u201cAinhoa plays bass.\u201d Another young woman, this one with short black hair spiked with dark red dye and a small hoop piercing her lip smiled at them. \u201cAnd, I\u2019m the lead singer,\u201d said Koldo, wrapping up the introductions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe sometimes plays tambourine, too\u201d said Ainhoa with a mischievous grin.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maite smiled. \u201cNice to meet you all,\u201d she said. \u201cWe\u2019ve been looking forward to today for a while.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kepa nodded. \u201cKoldo has said a lot of great things about you guys!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Idoia looked up from her guitar. \u201cI hope you like it loud and heavy!\u201d she said with her own devious grin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBai, horixe!\u201d exclaimed Maite. \u201cYou bet we do!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They heard the announcer say something about \u201cone of the newest bands\u201d and \u201cTximistak Ta Trumoiak.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe better get on stage,\u201d said Koldo. \u201cFind you after?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll be out there!\u201d replied Kepa.&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As they got closer to Aulesti, they found the road-side packed with cars.
