\u201cWhat? Coming with me?\u201d asked Maite.

\u201cSure!\u201d replied Kepa. \u201cIt\u2019s only an interview, right? We can make it a vacation. I\u2019ve got a cousin in California, so close to Berkeley\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou do know how big California is, don\u2019t you?\u201d interrupted Maite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBah!\u201d answered Kepa. \u201cOnce we are across the ocean, it\u2019s all close. We can rent a car, travel the coast\u2026\u201d

\u201cI\u2019ve got a distant cousin over there too,\u201d said Maite. \u201cWe could visit both of them, I guess, my cousin and your cousin.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Buber’s Basque Story is a weekly serial. While it is a work of fiction, it has elements from both my own experiences and stories I’ve heard from various people. The characters, while in some cases inspired by real people, aren’t directly modeled on anyone in particular. I expect there will be inconsistencies and factual errors. I don’t know where it is going, and I’ll probably forget where it’s been. Why am I doing this? To give me an excuse and a deadline for some creative writing and because I thought people might enjoy it. Gozatu!<\/p><\/blockquote><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat\u2019s the spirit!\u201d said Kepa excitedly. \u201cThis is going to be a great adventure! When is your interview?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWell, I haven\u2019t scheduled it yet\u201d replied Maite. \u201cIf I got accepted, they want me to start in January. I wrap up my studies here in July, so probably sometime in August?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat\u2019s perfect! I have my vacation then, so I can easily get away from work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maite smiled. \u201cSounds like a plan. Now I\u2019ve just got to tell my parents\u2026\u201d she said as her smile faded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cKnowing your parents, they will be thrilled for you. And, again, this is just an interview and vacation. We won\u2019t be gone for more than a few weeks. They\u2019ve got a lot of friends around here, they will be fine.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou are probably right. Ok, then,\u201d she said, \u201cI\u2019ll write Berkeley as soon as I get home and schedule the interview. Then we can buy tickets!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019ll write my cousin, he\u2019ll be excited to see us,\u201d said Kepa. \u201cHe\u2019s been over here a few times, but I\u2019ve never been there to see him.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI remember him! He\u2019d always hang out in ama and aita\u2019s bar, just sitting at the end, watching handball on the tele and sipping on his beer. What was his name?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cJavi. Yeah, he was a little shy and doesn\u2019t speak Euskara or Spanish very well. When I wasn\u2019t around, he didn\u2019t have much to do. He always came with his aita — my osaba — and his aita was always hanging out with old friends, playing cards, telling stories from their childhood. Javi didn\u2019t understand them so he hung out in the bar. After a few visits, though, he and I got to be better friends. He\u2019ll be happy to hear I\u2019m going out there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cGreat! And I\u2019ll write my cousin in New York. She\u2019s pretty distant, my ama\u2019s cousin\u2019s daughter, and I\u2019ve only met her once, but it would be cool to see New York and have someone local that can show us around.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
