Kepa and Maite helped Ainhoa to her feet and guided her to a nearby rock where she sat shivering. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cZer\u2026 Nola\u2026 Nor\u2026?\u201d stuttered Kepa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat the hell just happened?\u201d interrupted Maite. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe walked through that mountain,\u201d added Kepa. \u201cThat\u2019s not possible.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAnd that room?\u201d added Maite. \u201cHow did it just disappear like that? Who was that man? What was he doing here? Where did he go?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Buber’s Basque Story is a weekly serial. While it is a work of fiction, it has elements from both my own experiences and stories I’ve heard from various people. The characters, while in some cases inspired by real people, aren’t directly modeled on anyone in particular. I expect there will be inconsistencies and factual errors. I don’t know where it is going, and I’ll probably forget where it’s been. Why am I doing this? To give me an excuse and a deadline for some creative writing and because I thought people might enjoy it. Gozatu!<\/p><\/blockquote><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAinhoa, please explain what just happened,\u201d pleaded Kepa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ainhoa looked up at him and tried to speak, but her voice caught in her throat. \u201cUra?\u201d she asked. \u201cWater?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOf course,\u201d replied Kepa as he dove into his backpack and pulled out his water bottle. He handed it to Ainhoa who immediately downed several large gulps of water. Kepa then handed her one of the sandwiches they had packed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMil esker,\u201d she said as she took a bite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFeeling better?\u201d asked Maite. Ainhoa nodded. \u201cGood, then can you now tell us what just happened, Ainhoa?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ainhoa shook her head. \u201cI\u2019m not Ainhoa, at least, not right now.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNone of this makes sense!\u201d exclaimed Maite, getting to her feet. \u201cWhat is going on?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ainhoa took another drink. \u201cMy name is Marina. I was born in 1583 and died in 1609, at the hands of that man you saw in the cave. I\u2019m currently inhabiting Ainhoa\u2019s body, trying to stop that man from fulfilling his plans.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maite looked at Ainhoa, or Marina. \u201cSeriously?\u201d she said incredulously. \u201cYou expect us to believe this nonsense?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Marina shook her head. \u201cI know it is hard to grasp, especially for one from your time that is so used to science and logic. But, know this: there is magic and it can do wonderful things, in the right hands.\u201d Her face clouded over as she continued. \u201cBut, in the wrong hands\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLet\u2019s start from the beginning,\u201d interrupted Kepa. \u201cWho was that man and how are you here?\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maite gave him a searing look. \u201cYou are seriously going to entertain this txorakeria, this rubbish?\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
