{"id":4155,"date":"2021-03-14T15:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-03-14T15:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/buber.net\/Basque\/?p=4155"},"modified":"2021-02-28T15:33:08","modified_gmt":"2021-02-28T15:33:08","slug":"basque-fact-of-the-week-saint-pierre-and-miquelon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buber.net\/Basque\/2021\/03\/14\/basque-fact-of-the-week-saint-pierre-and-miquelon\/","title":{"rendered":"Basque Fact of the Week: Saint Pierre and Miquelon"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>On the furthest reaches of Canada&#8217;s eastern coast lies Saint Pierre and Miquelon, a small group of islands <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/St+Pierre+and+Miquelon\/@46.958177,-58.4941399,7z\/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x4b6c4b4bfb0e57d1:0x9c716737ea6c5c11!8m2!3d46.8852!4d-56.3159\">just south of Newfoundland<\/a>. A French <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Territorial_collectivity\">Territorial Collectivity<\/a>, the islands are the last remaining vestige of New France, at least in North America &#8211; the people are guaranteed French citizenship. However, perhaps more interestingly, if you look at their coat-of-arms, you&#8217;ll notice that the ikurri\u00f1a is displayed prominently, a monument to the Basque history of the islands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/buber.net\/Basque\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/500px-Armoiries_SaintPierreetMiquelon.svg_.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4157\" width=\"270\" height=\"367\" srcset=\"https:\/\/buber.net\/Basque\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/500px-Armoiries_SaintPierreetMiquelon.svg_.png 500w, https:\/\/buber.net\/Basque\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/500px-Armoiries_SaintPierreetMiquelon.svg_-221x300.png 221w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 270px) 100vw, 270px\" \/><figcaption>The coat-of-arms of St Pierre et Miquelon. Superbenjamin, CC BY-SA 4.0 <a href=\"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by-sa\/4.0\">https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by-sa\/4.0<\/a>, via Wikimedia Commons.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Humans have visited these islands for at least 8000 years, with the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Beothuk\">Beothuk<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paleo-Eskimo\">Paleo-Eskimo or Pre-Inuit<\/a> peoples at least stepping foot on the islands, though it seems that, if they ever settled the islands, by the time Europeans arrived, there were no inhabitants. By at least 1517, Basque whalers, primarily from <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Saint-Jean-de-Luz\">Donibane Lohizune<\/a> (Saint Jean de Luz) and Ziburu, had found the islands and, alongside Normans and Bretons, began to settle the islands in the 17th century. Captain Juanes de Li\u00e7aurdi, commissioned by shipowner Adam de Chibau from Donibane Lohizune, established a fishing station in the south of the islands between 1602 and 1611.<\/li><li>The fishing industry, in decline throughout the nineteenth century, was revitalized by an influx of new Basques, who hailed primarily from <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gu\u00e9thary\">Getaria<\/a> (Gh\u00e9tary-Bidart), Donibane Lohizune\/<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ciboure\">Ziburu<\/a> (Ciboure), Urru\u00f1a (Urrugne), <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hendaye\">Hendaia<\/a> (Hendaye) and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Saint-P\u00e9e-sur-Nivelle\">Senpere<\/a> (Saint-P\u00e9e). <\/li><li>The name Miquelon is thought to be of Basque origin, likely related to the name Mikel. Though, the true origin seems lost to time.<\/li><li>Even today, there are vestiges of the Basque history of the islands. Pelota is a popular sport, and the Basque cultural group on the islands &#8211; Zazpiak-bat &#8211; takes its name from the fronton on the island of Saint Pierre. Every year, the islands hold a Basque festival, featuring traditional dance and sporting events. There were even traces of the Basque language into the twentieth century.<\/li><li>As a final testament to that long Basque history, there are numerous Basque surnames associated with the inhabitants of the islands, names such as Amestoy, Bildosteguy, Doyharcabal, Errecart, Gastambide, Hiraburu, Iturbide, Jaureguiberry, Larranaga, Mendizabal, Oyarzabal, Puchulut\u00e9guy, Sabarotz, Telletchia, Uzandizaga, and Zagaramurdy.  <\/li><li>During World War II, there was a bit of an international dust up when <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Free_France\">Free France<\/a>, the French government-in-exile, under the orders of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Charles_de_Gaulle\">General Charles de Gaulle<\/a>, took the islands from the Nazi-sympathizing <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vichy_France\">Vichy<\/a> government. The United States decried this use of military power in the Americas by a European force, contrary to the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Monroe_Doctrine\">Monroe Doctrine<\/a>, but the incident seems to have been just as suddenly forgotten. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Primary sources: Mart\u00ednez Artola, Alberto.&nbsp;<em>Saint-Pierre-Et-Miquelon<\/em>.
