She found herself kneeling on the floor of the Registry Room, in the very corner where she and Kepa had touched hands just before they had been thrown back in time. Kepa was kneeling next to her, dressed in the much more casual clothes he had put on that morning. Maite could swear that the people in the museum behind her were in exactly the same positions they had left them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d asked Kepa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know. I guess, when we touched that zatia, we somehow collected it and the time bubble literally popped, sending us back here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"perfect-pullquote vcard pullquote-align-right pullquote-border-placement-left\" style=\"font-size:14px !important;\"><blockquote><p style=\"font-size:14px !important;\">Buber&#8217;s Basque Story is a weekly serial. While it is a work of fiction, it has elements from both my own experiences and stories I&#8217;ve heard from various people. The characters, while in some cases inspired by real people, aren&#8217;t directly modeled on anyone in particular. I expect there will be inconsistencies and factual errors. I don&#8217;t know where it is going, and I&#8217;ll probably forget where it&#8217;s been. Why am I doing this? To give me an excuse and a deadline for some creative writing and because I thought people might enjoy it. Gozatu!<\/p><\/blockquote><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhere is the zatia then?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maite shrugged. \u201cMaybe inside of us, like the ones that Marina gave us?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI guess we\u2019ll have to ask her,\u201d replied Kepa. \u201cWhenever we see her again.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt seems that, because she had no family here, no connection to this time and place, she wasn\u2019t able to find us, to help us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut de Lancre already knew us. How did he know who we were? Did he see us when we were in that cave?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maite shook her head. \u201cI suspect that, even though this was the first time we met him, it wasn\u2019t the first time he had met us. From his perspective, according to his timeline, we met before. As we jump through time, our timelines aren\u2019t straight lines anymore and they can cross in strange ways.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Suddenly, Maite squeezed Kepa\u2019s hand. \u201cBlas!\u201d she exclaimed. \u201cHe\u2026 he was dead. de Lancre killed him!\u201d Tears began pooling in her eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut, the bubble,\u201d replied Kepa, panic rising in his voice. \u201cShouldn\u2019t it have undone itself when it popped? When we got the zatia?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maite\u2019s body shook. \u201cEz dakit. I don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kepa pulled out his phone and did a quick search. \u201cBlas\u2026 Telleria\u2026\u201d he mumbled as he typed. \u201cHere!\u201d he said as he passed the phone to Maite. \u201cI think everything is ok.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maite read a brief biography of Blas Telleria that Kepa had found on a website from a museum in Idaho. \u201cHe made it to Oregon and started a family there,\u201d she said. She sighed as her shoulders relaxed. \u201cYou were right, the bubble popped and things happened as if it had never existed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAre you two ok?\u201d said a voice from above them. They looked up and saw Edurne, her face etched with concern.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maite looked at Edurne and then at Kepa. She smiled. \u201cYes,\u201d she said as she stood. \u201cYes, I think so.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Maite looked around.
