Maite was taken with the costumes and the stage sets and was thoroughly engaged by the dramatic story. Kepa, who struggled to follow the dialog and who had had his fill of adventure for the day, as predicted, fell asleep. Maite nudged him more than once as his snores threatened to drown out the actors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWould you be quiet?\u201d she hissed in his ear, clearly exasperated, as she poked him in the ribs for the fourth time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kepa shrugged apologetically. \u201cBarkatu, I can\u2019t help it.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"perfect-pullquote vcard pullquote-align-right pullquote-border-placement-left\" style=\"font-size:14px !important;\"><blockquote><p style=\"font-size:14px !important;\">Buber&#8217;s Basque Story is a weekly serial. While it is a work of fiction, it has elements from both my own experiences and stories I&#8217;ve heard from various people. The characters, while in some cases inspired by real people, aren&#8217;t directly modeled on anyone in particular. I expect there will be inconsistencies and factual errors. I don&#8217;t know where it is going, and I&#8217;ll probably forget where it&#8217;s been. Why am I doing this? To give me an excuse and a deadline for some creative writing and because I thought people might enjoy it. Gozatu!<\/p><\/blockquote><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Just then the first act ended. The curtains fell and the lights came on for intermission.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kepa stood and stretched. \u201cI may hang out in the lobby for the rest of it, so I don\u2019t disturb the play,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d hate for you to miss it,\u201d said Edurne as she also stood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLasai, Edurne,\u201d replied Maite with a glare at Kepa. \u201cHe\u2019s already missed the first act.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kepa gave her a sheepish look as he made his way down the row of seats and into the aisle. As they all headed to the restrooms, Kepa headed to the lobby. \u201cSee you when it\u2019s done,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maite pulled him close and gave him a quick kiss on the lips. \u201cTry not to snore too loud out there either,\u201d she said and then queued for the restroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kepa made his way to the lobby. Fortunately, the theater had a bar. He found a seat. The bartender eventually found his way to Kepa. \u201cWhat will you have?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cGin kas, please,\u201d replied Kepa in his heavily accented English.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cGin and what?\u201d asked the bartender.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kepa shook his head, exasperated. He was too tired to figure this out.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCould he get a gin and tonic with an extra splash of lemon juice?\u201d a voice next to him asked. \u201cMake that two.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The bartender nodded as Kepa turned to see Unai settling in on the stool next to him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEskerrik asko,\u201d said Kepa.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEz da ezer,\u201d replied Unai.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat are you doing out here?\u201d asked Kepa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTruth be told, I really don\u2019t go for these plays. It\u2019s not really my thing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIsn\u2019t Eric going to be upset?\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNah, he knows that I only tolerate these things at best. And this time, I have an excuse for ducking out.\u201d The bartender brought the two drinks, placing them down in front of Kepa and Unai. Unai held his glass up. \u201cMil esker,\u201d he said with a smile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEz da ezer,\u201d replied Kepa, returning Unai\u2019s smile as he took a sip of his drink.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If you have comments or questions, or have simply been enjoying the story and want to say hello, please drop me a note!
