{"id":4551,"date":"2021-05-09T15:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-05-09T15:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/buber.net\/Basque\/?p=4551"},"modified":"2021-05-09T13:14:28","modified_gmt":"2021-05-09T13:14:28","slug":"basque-fact-of-the-week-other-basque-cities-were-bombed-during-the-spanish-civil-war","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buber.net\/Basque\/2021\/05\/09\/basque-fact-of-the-week-other-basque-cities-were-bombed-during-the-spanish-civil-war\/","title":{"rendered":"Basque Fact of the Week: Other Basque Cities Were Bombed During the Spanish Civil War"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A couple of weeks ago, on the 84th anniversary of the bombing of Gernika, I posted about <a href=\"https:\/\/buber.net\/Basque\/2021\/04\/25\/basque-fact-of-the-week-picassos-guernica\/\">Picasso&#8217;s <em>Guernica<\/em><\/a>, and how it was inspired by those horrific events. Eneko Sagarbide and Jabier Aldekozea pointed out that <a href=\"https:\/\/buber.net\/Basque\/2019\/04\/28\/basque-fact-of-the-week-gernika-was-not-the-only-nor-even-the-first-basque-town-bombed-during-the-spanish-civil-war\/\">Gernika was not the only, nor even the first, Basque city bombed<\/a> during the Spanish Civil War. In fact, as emphasized in his book <em><a href=\"https:\/\/web-argitalpena.adm.ehu.es\/listaproductos.asp?IdProducts=UHHNC202598&amp;titulo=%93Arrasar%E9%20Vizcaya%94.%202000%20bombardeos%20a%E9reos%20en%20Euskadi%20(1936-1937)\">\u201cArrasar\u00e9 Vizcaya\u201d. 2000 bombardeos a\u00e9reos en Euskadi (1936-1937)<\/a><\/em>, Xabier Irujo recounts that the Basque Country was bombed some 2000 and several important Basque cities were devastated as a result. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/buber.net\/Basque\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Durangoko_bonbardaketa_-_1937ko_martxoaren_31.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4552\" width=\"312\" height=\"208\" srcset=\"https:\/\/buber.net\/Basque\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Durangoko_bonbardaketa_-_1937ko_martxoaren_31.jpg 550w, https:\/\/buber.net\/Basque\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Durangoko_bonbardaketa_-_1937ko_martxoaren_31-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 312px) 100vw, 312px\" \/><figcaption>A photo of Durango as it was being bombed, taken by an Italian pilot. Photo from <a href=\"https:\/\/sustatu.eus\/1301416718\">Sustatu<\/a>.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eibar\">Eibar<\/a>, just on the Gipuzkoa side of the border with Bizkaia, was first bombed on August 28, 1936, and was bombed fifteen times &#8212; twelve between the dates of April 22 and 25, 1937 &#8212; until the city finally fell on April 26, 1937, the same day that Gernika was bombed. According to the book <em>The Civil War in Eibar and Elgeta<\/em>, by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/second.wiki\/link?to=jesc3bas_gutic3a9rrez&amp;lang=en&amp;alt=https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jes%C3%BAs_Guti%C3%A9rrez&amp;source=historia_de_c389ibar\">Jes\u00fas Guti\u00e9rrez<\/a>, the population was reduced to about 150 people from some 13,000, many due to casualties and evacuations. In the urban center, out of 488 buildings, 156 were completely destroyed and another 101 were damaged. 840 out of 1750 homes were destroyed. After the war, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.diariovasco.com\/v\/20120423\/politica\/eibar-ejemplo-recuperacion-convivencia-20120423.html\">the population had been reduced to 5,000<\/a>.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Durango,_Biscay\">Durango<\/a>, Bizkaia, was bombed on March 31, 1937 by both the Italian\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Aviazione_Legionaria\">Aviazione Legionaria<\/a><\/em>\u00a0and the German\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Legion_Condor\">Legion Condor<\/a><\/em>. Durango was a road and rail junction between Bilbao and the front lines of the war. Two of the town&#8217;s churches were bombed while conducting mass, leading to the death of 14 nuns and a priest. Estimates put the civilian death toll at about 250 people. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Elorrio\">Elorrio<\/a>, a nearby tourist destination known for its spas, was bombed on the same day. After Durango, the civilian populace began to realize that their houses were not safe against the bombings and began taking refuge in, amongst other places, local <a href=\"https:\/\/buber.net\/Basque\/2021\/01\/31\/basque-fact-of-the-week-caves-and-caverns-of-the-basque-country\/\">caves<\/a>.<\/li><li>My dad&#8217;s home town of Gerrikaitz, and the associated town of Arbatzegi, which together comprise Munitibar, was bombed in the morning of April 26, 1937, just hours before Gernika. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kondaira.eus\/article\/view\/71\">11 people were killed<\/a>. The nearby towns of Markina, Ziortza-Bolibar, Arratzu, Muxika, and Errigoiti were also bombed during this wave. In fact, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Markina-Xemein\">Markina<\/a> was the first Basque city bombed by air in the war, on September 29, 1936, but this first bombing caused little damage. In fact, people were more curious than anything when these first bombings and attacks occurred as they were fascinated by the planes flying overhead. However, that all changed when 6 people were killed by such attacks in Markina in October, 1936. By the end of the war, Markina had been bombed at least 20 times.<\/li><li>The Bizkaian towns of Etxebarria and Berriatua were bombed starting in October, 1936. In fact, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.debabarrenaturismo.com\/en\/see\/mountains\/kalamua\">Mount Kalamua<\/a>, part of the front lines and where the towns of Markina, Etxebarria, and Elgoibar converge, was bombed nearly every day between October 1 and 20 by Italian planes.<\/li><li>These are only a few of the bombings that occurred against the Basque populace.
