The first official <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paralympic_Games\">Paralympic Games<\/a> were held in 1960 in Rome, though there were precursors to this historic event. There are at least thirteen athletes from the Basque Country going to Tokyo for the 2020 Paralympic Games. They will be competing in events from wheelchair basketball (both men&#8217;s and women&#8217;s), swimming, rowing and paracanoe, running, cycling, triathlon, table tennis, and archery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/buber.net\/Basque\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/beatriz-zudaire.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4839\" width=\"164\" height=\"255\" srcset=\"https:\/\/buber.net\/Basque\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/beatriz-zudaire.jpg 328w, https:\/\/buber.net\/Basque\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/beatriz-zudaire-193x300.jpg 193w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 164px) 100vw, 164px\" \/><figcaption>Beatriz Zudaire shooting a basket. At the age of 14, she was injured in a bus accident. She is on the Spanish national wheelchair basketball team. She is studying for a Bachelor&#8217;s Degree in Business Administration and Management at the Faculty of Economic and Business Sciences the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/second.wiki\/link?to=universidad_del_pac3ads_vasco&amp;lang=en&amp;alt=https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Universidad_del_Pa%C3%ADs_Vasco&amp;source=agurtzane_egiluz\">University of the Basque Country<\/a>.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucamdeportes.com\/deportista\/beatriz-zudaire-garcia\">Beatriz Zudaire Garcia<\/a> is also on the Spanish national wheelchair basketball team. From <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pamplona.es\">Pamplona<\/a>, Nafarroa, she began as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.noticiasdenavarra.com\/deportes\/mas-deportes\/2016\/11\/07\/sueno-olimpico-beatriz-zudaire\/622856.html\">an accomplished swimmer<\/a>, but switched to basketball when a team was formed in Vitoria. <\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Asier_Garc%C3%ADa\">Asier Garc\u00eda Pereiro<\/a> is on the men&#8217;s Spanish national wheelchair basketball team. He was in an accident when he was 13. In addition to playing basketball, he graduated with a <a href=\"https:\/\/basqueteam.eus\/deportista\/baloncesto\/asier-garcia\/\">degree in computer science<\/a> from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.deusto.es\/cs\/Satellite\/deusto\/en\/university-deusto\">University of Deusto<\/a>. He is the captain of the team.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/basqueteam.eus\/deportista\/natacion\/inigo-llopis\/\">I\u00f1igo Llopis Sanz<\/a> is from Donostia. He is a swimmer, specializing in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.paralympic.org\/feature\/inigo-llopis-seeks-hit-top-form-ahead-tokyo-2020\">100 meter backstroke and the 400 meter freestyle<\/a>. He is also passionate about soccer and has plans to become a coach.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.diariovasco.com\/buruntzaldea\/lasarte\/nahia-zudaire-triunfa-20210703215312-ntvo.html\">Nadia Zudaire Borrezo<\/a> is also a swimmer, from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zubieta.eus\/es\/inicio-hasiera\/\">Zubieta<\/a>, Gipuzkoa, who will compete in the 400 meter freestyle. In the Berlin Swimming Championship held in July, she set Spanish records for both the 400 and 800 meter freestyle.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/basqueteam.eus\/deportista\/piraguismo\/higinio-rivero\/\">Higinio Rivero Fernandez<\/a> is a specialist in the paracanoe. In 2013, he had an accident while climbing that left him paraplegic. He kept his same passion for sport, but channeling it instead into canoe. <\/li><li>Jorge Pineda Matabuena is a rower from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.getxo.eus\/en\/turismo\/\">Getxo<\/a>. He will compete in the <a href=\"https:\/\/arrauna.eu\/juegos-paralimpicos-tokio\/\">four-crew mixed boat<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tododisca.com\/tokio-2020-embarcacion-espanola-remeros-timonel-participaran\/\">In this race<\/a>, the crew must be composed of two men and two women. In addition, two must be physically disabled and two visually impaired, accompanied by a non-disabled helmsman.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.navarradigital.es\/articulo\/deportes\/remo\/20200814211258014387.html\">Estibaliz Armendariz Zubillaga<\/a>, born without her right leg in Pamplona in 1974, is a rower. She is also an R&amp;D manager for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.naitec.es\/en\/\">Naitec<\/a>. She also translated Lawrence Kraus&#8217;s <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/f%C3%ADsica-Star-Trek-Lawrence-Krauss\/dp\/8492422564\">The Physics of Star Trek<\/a><\/em> to Spanish.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Izaskun_Os\u00e9s_Ay\u00facar\">Izaskun Os\u00e9s Ay\u00facar<\/a> was also born in Pamplona, in 1984. She is a blind runner, having won bronze in the 2016 Rio Games in the 1500 meters. She earned a nursing degree but had to give up the profession due to her deteriorating vision.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eduardo_Santas\">Eduardo Santas Asensio<\/a>, born in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zaragoza.es\">Zaragoza<\/a> but living in the Basque Country, is a cyclist. Since 2014, he has won 14 medals at the World Championships for Adaptive Cycling. He won a bronze medal in the Mixed Team Spring in the 2016 Rio Games.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rakel_Mateo\">Rakel Mateo Uriate<\/a> is a paratriathlete. One of her legs was paralyzed after an accident in 2001. She has been the Spanish <a href=\"https:\/\/basqueteam.eus\/deportista\/triatlon\/rakel-mateo\/\">paratriathlete champion<\/a> three times in her career. She is currently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.triathlon.org\/athletes\/profile\/83455\/rakel_mateo_uriarte\">ranked 5th in the world<\/a>. She is from <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mungia\">Mungia<\/a>, Bizkaia.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/basqueteam.eus\/deportista\/tenis-de-mesa\/iker-sastre\/\">Iker Sastre Sanchez-Vallejo<\/a> was born in Bilbao in 1977. His sport is table tennis. When he was 23, he suffered a surfing accident that left him with a spinal cord injury. He has won multiple championships in Bizkaia, Euskadi, and Spain. He is currently ranked 9th in the world. He is the first Basque table tennis player to ever play in the Olympics in any form.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mar%C3%ADa_Carmen_Rubio\">Mar\u00eda Carmen Rubio Larrion<\/a> is an archer from Pamplona. She was born in 1961. She participated in the 2012 Games in London.
