{"id":590,"date":"2011-07-09T14:02:18","date_gmt":"2011-07-09T14:02:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/buber.net\/Basque\/?p=590"},"modified":"2011-07-09T14:02:18","modified_gmt":"2011-07-09T14:02:18","slug":"harnessing-tides-for-power","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buber.net\/Basque\/2011\/07\/09\/harnessing-tides-for-power\/","title":{"rendered":"Harnessing tides for power"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/buber.net\/Basque\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/mutriku_5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-591\" style=\"border: 1px solid black; margin: 5px;\" title=\"mutriku_5\" src=\"https:\/\/buber.net\/Basque\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/mutriku_5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"257\" height=\"207\" \/><\/a>A very interesting development from the Basque Country.\u00a0 With all of the concerns related to climate change and dependence on foreign oil, people are looking for new ways to extract energy from where ever possible.\u00a0 The Basque Country is known for its waves &#8212; just ask any surfing aficionado.\u00a0 And while not as famous as nearby Mundaka for surfing, Mutriku is still valued for its waves.<\/p>\n<p>Thus, it makes perfect sense to try to harness those waves for power.\u00a0 Hence, the world&#8217;s first multi-turbine breakwater wave power station has been built in the port of Mutriku.\u00a0 This power station can generate 300 kilowatts of power, about enough to power 250 homes.\u00a0 It just went online yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>Some information about this initiative to harness power from the tides is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eve.es\/web\/Energias-Renovables\/Energia-marina.aspx?lang=en-GB\">here<\/a> along with a <a href=\"http:\/\/domesticfuel.com\/2011\/07\/08\/spains-first-wave-power-plant-goes-online\/\">news release<\/a> about the station.
