is a weekly serial. While it is a work of fiction, it has elements from both my own experiences and stories I’ve heard from various people. The characters, while in some cases inspired by real people, aren’t directly modeled on anyone in particular. I expect there will be inconsistencies and factual errors. I don’t know where it is going, and I’ll probably forget where it’s been. Why am I doing this? To give me an excuse and a deadline for some creative writing and because I thought people might enjoy it. Gozatu!<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\nThe next day started late. Kepa could hear his ama puttering around downstairs, but he simply groaned and turned over in his bed, pulling his pillow over his head. It wasn\u2019t until early afternoon that he finally pulled himself out of bed and made his way downstairs. He found his ama in the kitchen, a cup of hot coffee waiting for him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She smiled at him. \u201cHave a good time?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Kepa returned her smile. While he didn\u2019t go out like this very often, whenever he did, his ama always just smiled at him. It always made him wonder about her younger days, what she got up to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cHow was California?\u201d she asked. While he had stopped by after landing, he had only had time for a brief hello before rushing out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt was great,\u201d replied Kepa as he savored his first sip of coffee. \u201cMaite\u2019s interview went very well.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A slight frown flashed across Mari Carmen\u2019s lips before disappearing like a ghost. \u201cWhen would she leave?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Kepa shrugged. \u201cShe isn\u2019t sure she wants to go.\u201d He took another sip of coffee. \u201cYou know, her parents and all.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThey would want her to go, I\u2019m sure.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Kepa nodded. \u201cBai, but she isn\u2019t ready to leave them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIs that all?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWhat do you mean?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThere isn\u2019t another reason for her to stay?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Kepa blushed. How could she possibly know?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He took a bigger sip this time, trying to delay his response as long as he could, wishing she might forget what she just asked, knowing she wouldn\u2019t let it drop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cMaite and I are dating,\u201d he finally said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mari Carmen\u2019s face beamed. \u201cAzkenean! At last!\u201d She pulled grabbed her son\u2019s head, pulling it close and planting a kiss on his forehead. \u201cI\u2019m so happy for you!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Kepa pulled back. \u201cWe are just dating, ama! Don\u2019t expect any grandkids any time soon.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mari Carmen just smiled as she went back to the stove.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
