Maite and Kepa were strolling along La Concha in Donostia. The sun glistened off of the water in the bay, which slowly lapped at the beach. People were spread out everywhere. Kids were splashing in the water while their parents sat back under umbrellas, watching them. More than a few people were sunbathing and Kepa\u2019s eyes kept wandering to the topless women scattered here and there on the beach.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/buber.net\/Basque\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/maite-and-kepa-v3b.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4558\" width=\"277\" height=\"387\" srcset=\"https:\/\/buber.net\/Basque\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/maite-and-kepa-v3b.png 369w, https:\/\/buber.net\/Basque\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/maite-and-kepa-v3b-215x300.png 215w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 277px) 100vw, 277px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The Adventures of Maite and Kepa<em> is a weekly serial. While it is a work of fiction, it has elements from both my own experiences and stories I&#8217;ve heard from various people. The characters, while in some cases inspired by real people, aren&#8217;t directly modeled on anyone in particular. I expect there will be inconsistencies and factual errors. I don&#8217;t know where it is going, and I&#8217;ll probably forget where it&#8217;s been. Why am I doing this? To give me an excuse and a deadline for some creative writing and because I thought people might enjoy it. Gozatu!<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhy don\u2019t we go to the beach more often?\u201d he asked absentmindedly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maite elbowed him in the ribs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOw!\u201d exclaimed Kepa in mock pain. \u201cWhat was that for?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou get distracted too easily,\u201d she chuckled. \u201cAs I was saying, what did you think of those apartments?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cRight, sorry,\u201d replied Kepa. \u201cWell, I liked the one in the Parte Vieja; it would be cool to live there. But it was a bit run down and I do wonder if it would be hard to study there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maite nodded. \u201cBai, I think it would always be pretty loud there. What about the one in Egia?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kepa shrugged. \u201cIt was fine, but nothing special. There was nothing wrong with it, but I just didn\u2019t find the neighborhood all that interesting.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maite sighed. \u201cI agree. And the one closer to the university was a bit more expensive than I hoped. It would be hard to afford that one.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWell,\u201d said Kepa, \u201cunless I get a good job.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI don\u2019t want you to have to pay for everything.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kepa winked at her. \u201cOne day, when you are a famous scientist, you\u2019ll be the one paying for everything.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHa!\u201d Maite burst out laughing. \u201cYou don\u2019t really have any idea of how this science thing works, do you?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat do you mean?\u201d asked Kepa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s long hours. And the pay isn\u2019t great.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSo why are you doing this again?\u201d asked Kepa, jokingly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFor the fame and the glory,\u201d replied Maite with a wink.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI guess we\u2019ll just have to live off of that,\u201d said Kepa with a smile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWell, you can\u2019t eat fame nor glory,\u201d said Maite before pausing. She was staring across the bay at the small island that arose out of the water.
