{"id":69,"date":"2009-04-08T12:40:38","date_gmt":"2009-04-08T12:40:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/buber.net\/Basque\/?p=69"},"modified":"2009-04-08T12:40:38","modified_gmt":"2009-04-08T12:40:38","slug":"understanding-guernica","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buber.net\/Basque\/2009\/04\/08\/understanding-guernica\/","title":{"rendered":"Understanding Guernica"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" style=\"border: 1px solid black; margin: 5px; float: right;\" src=\"http:\/\/newsimg.bbc.co.uk\/media\/images\/45641000\/gif\/_45641976_horse.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"226\" height=\"170\" \/>It was one of the most horrific events in modern warfare.\u00a0 During the Spanish Civil War, at the behest of Franco, the German Luftwaffe bombed the Basque town of Gernika, on a Monday, the traditional market day for the town.\u00a0 They also bombed Durango and, I have read, the town where my dad is from, Gerrikaitz (though I have not found any details about that).\u00a0 Gernika was one of the first examples of aerial bombardment of a city to provoke terror in its citizens.\u00a0 Since then, there have been many other examples.\u00a0 See <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bombing_of_Guernica\">this Wikipedia article<\/a> for more information about the bombing.<\/p>\n<p>At about the same time, Picasso was asked to paint a large mural for Spain&#8217;s contribution to the World&#8217;s Fair to be held in Paris.\u00a0 Picasso ended up chosing the bombing of Gernika as his subject and painted his now famous and iconic <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Guernica_(painting)\"><em>Guernica<\/em><\/a>.\u00a0 It is an impressive painting, currently hanging in the Reina Sofia museum in Madrid.\u00a0 It is huge, encompassing an entire wall in the museum.\u00a0 As with most works of art of this magnitude and importance, the meanings of the various elements &#8212; the bull, the horse, the various people &#8212; have been debated almost since Picasso first displayed the piece.<\/p>\n<p>Author and Picasso expert Gijs van Hensbergen has recently written a new book about his interpretation of the meanings of those symbols, entitled <em>Guernica: The Biography of a 20th Century Icon<\/em>.
