A number of years ago, two friends of mine, Xabier Ormaetxea and Susan Ybarra, decided to do surname research for those who were curious about their Basque surnames. They had information about the meaning of the names, where they are found in the Basque Country, and coats of arms that are on record. This list is the result of their efforts.
Note that this list is by no means complete; there are many Basque surnames not listed. If your name is not listed, the best place to learn more about your name is the Basque Genealogy group at Yahoo or by looking at some the resources in the Diaspora section of these pages. One particularly good resource if you understand Spanish is the Enciclopedia Auñamendi.
