ARANA is a common basque surname, the meaning of which is "Valley". Bizkaia, or
Vizcaya, is one of the three Basque provinces in the Basque Autonomous Community, located in the west of the Basque
Country (in the Spanish part of the Basque Country); it's
capital is Bilbao. The origin of Basque surnames are the names of farms or
houses, the families used the same name as the house they owned. The problem
is that there are about 34 houses with the name ARANA in Bizkaia, so the
only way to investigate the origin of your branch of this surname is by making a genealogical
chart.
The founder of Basque nationalism, also considered the father of the Country,
was Sabino Arana.
