This surname originates in Gernika.
You mentioned in your request that the surname means "Blackberry" and
that is correct. More precisely it comes from the root "asi"
(blackberry) and the suffix "la" (denoting the locality). So this
original house was probably in an area where blackberries were
cultivated.
The shield of the coat of arms is divided horizontally by a line which
is sloped (like a mountain on the horizon). The part above the line is a
field of red upon which there are three crosses of gold. Below the line
three black ermines on a field silver. This bottom part is surrounded by
a gold border.
