ORMAZA (ORMASA, HORMAZA)
In the Basque country this surname is spelled ORMAZA or HORMAZA and is
found in Vizcaya as early as 1659. It is known to be a variation of
Hormaza which may have a link to the name Hormaza originating in La
Villa de Hormaza (Burgos).
As you mentioned in your request, it could well mean "old stone wall."
While I am not certain about the "old" or "stone" part of that
interpretation I can certainly see how that idea was formed. Ormaza
means the place of the walls, from "orma" (wall) and the suffix for
abundance "tza."
There are several coats of arms mentioned, but they are not attributed
to any specific location. So I will simply describe one of them here:
On a silver field. A band (diagonal stripe) of blue, from the top left
corner to the bottom right corner of the shield.
