  1. Hi, my name is Veronika and I make a semester project about separatists in Spain.. Can you help me with some information? Please, I do not need facts, but what I really need is your own opinions and emotions. Please, send it to my mail – veronika1102@post.sk. Thank you 🙂

  2. Veronika, you should join the forum at buber.net/Forum/ and ask your questions there. Someone there might be able to help. You likely won’t get much help in these posts.

  3. Hi, I absolutely love your website it is very informative. I am a 23 year old male living in Miami, FL. I have a BA in Political Science and now I am pursuing another BS in Computer Science at Florida International University. My grandfather Fernando Guridi told us stories about our families history but, it still remains quite ambiguous. We know that his family originated in Basque (we don’t know where) and they fled to Cuba somewhere around the 19th century. They left Basque due to violent disputes over land, my grandfather even said that some of the family members were slaughtered in the fields. I have done research but always come to dead ends, it seems that most people named Guridi spread out across the America’s. I really want to know where our family lived in Basque and why they left because, I hope to someday visit and walk on the same ground my ancestors harvested for millennium.

    1. Hi Steve,

Thanks for the very nice comments. The best place to ask about Basque genealogy would be the basque-genealogy group at groups.yahoo.com/group/basque-genealogy/? The people there know a lot. Otherwise, you can check out the Diaspora section of my page as there are a few links to professional genealogists that can also help with the search.

      Best of luck!

  4. Hi… I am writing a children’s book and I need some help on Basque dialogue… I’ve looked at numerous websites but I can’t seem to find the answer to some simple questions I have – i.e. what do Basque children call their grandma/grandpa/uncle/aunt…. not the proper word but what is used by the people. In my family we used the Spanish terms: Abuela, Abuelo, Tio and Tia… but – for example I can’t figure out if it is correct to use Amama, Amona, or Amuma for Grandma?
I have a few other questions about greetings and terms of endearment… Can you point me in a direction or can I join your forum and ask…
    thank you for your help,
    Linda

    1. Hi Linda,

The forum was getting abused too much so it is permanently down. I think the best place to ask this would be on my Facebook site, as some of the visitors there might know. If you aren’t on Facebook, I can post the question there. It does depend on which province they are from. For Bizkaia, where my dad is from, it seems that they would use Amuma and Aitxitxa, but I don’t know if there are more colloquial versions…

      1. thanks so much… I am on Facebook and will join your page and ask my questions….

  5. Hi,
My last name is Muniain, a basque last name. My father’s side is Basque, and my mother’s American, so I consider myself basque-american. my father is from Bilbao. For those of you who read this and are fans of Athletic Bilbao, there is a player names Iker Muniain-same last name and I’ve played soccer my whole life… not sure if we are related, but since there are so little basques it is actually quite possible we are related

HOWEVER my main reason for this post is that I live in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and it has been recently very important for me to get in touch with other basque’s living in the USA. Maybe we can start our own soccer team like Athletic Club for only basque’s in the USA to play in the MLS.

How is it for other basque’s (that live in communities) in the US?

    kaixo,
    Jontxu Muniain

  6. I have been looking for a certain song since I was a child in the sixties. I heard a tape taken from an album of a choir singing folk songs of France. The Basque songs were particularly good, and of course they were quite different from the other songs, especially one that was my favourite. I was told that it was about horses. It was a march, and the refrain was a single voice crying out “Ayayayayayay (7X) ahahoo!” – which of course I loved – and I was told that this represented the cry of a wild horse. Please tell me if you have any leads on the name of this song, performers or any way I can obtain a recording. Thank you.
