Francisco Carriedo???

Hey friends of Buber’s Basque Page! I got a query about Francisco Carriedo and if I knew anything about the man. He was a military officer who served as Capitan General of the Philippines back in early 1700s. He was the benefactor who supported the creation of Manila’s water system. But, that’s all I could find on internet.

His descendants are trying to find out more about the man – where he came from, what his life was like, etc. If you know of any sources that discuss Francisco in any depth, please let me know or post here.

  1. Greetings,
You may want to go to the UNM Center for Southwest Research Website and enter Archivo General de Indias.
It is a very large guide of over 1,000 pages.

A Quick background about AGI: the original papers are housed in Seville, Spain. UNM –the Center has photocopies of what pertains to NM…many books!!! as well as other parts of the world–South America and the Philippines. King Felipe II of Spain named the Philippines.

Many of the entries have notations in English and Spanish. AGI can be downloaded for the Center’s website.

Also, feel free to call the Center at UNM.

    Good luck.

    1. Thanks Monique. This isn’t my project, but a reader’s. If you have a specific link or place I can send them, that would be great and I can pass it along to them.

      1. I understood that it was not your project. I already gave a specific link.
The specific link I gave was AGI at UNM Center for Southwest Research. AGI can be downloaded.
There is an article on Wikipedia with a bibliography at the end–that too is another start. It depends how much info. the reader wants.
Behind the TV show “Finding your Roots” there are many days and often months of research.

I took a casual look on the internet and I can tell from experience that it is going to take a long time and a lot of reading–reading in Spanish and in French– to find out detailed ( detailed is the key word) information about Francisco Carriendo.
The other alternative your readers have is to pay a researcher to do the work.

  3. Greetings,
    Something I found on WorldCat.Org.
” Corriedo y sus Obras. Memoria de las Obras Pias de los Pobres y del Agua. Author: Francisco de Mas y Otzet. 1882
    Publisher: Ramirez y Giraudier. Manila.

The book is house in many libraries–Ca,Io, Tx, and more. It should be available for inter library loan.

WorldCat.Org is a world wide library catalog. Google WorldCat.Org. Very useful to start a research.
