Goian Bego, Tio Joe

Tio Joe at his 100th birthday celebration.

In December, my dad’s uncle, the man I knew as uncle tio when I was a kid, turned 100. He passed away on March 5. Tio Joe lived a long and good life. He was the catalyst for my dad to come to the United States. He was always full of stories and had a memory that was as sharp as ever – he could remember numbers from decades earlier. We got to see him the last time we went to the Basque Country in 2023. Though he was weak and tired, he still had stories to tell.

Goian bego, Tio Joe. You’ll be missed.

  1. I had the honor of knowing tio Jose since I was a child. He was a quiet, humble, coherent and balanced person, who could go unnoticed, but who without intending to, left his mark on you and become part of your emotional universe. We will miss you, tio Jose!

  2. Very true Blas!, He has been always joyful, helpful and very clase to relatives, friends, neighbours. Goian bego!

  3. It is Tio Joe body that left this earth but his spirit is still alive–some where in the beautiful Basque country. When you least expect it, Tio Joe will come and visit to make sure that every thing is OK. You will know. Smile and cherish the moment. Monique
